“This was the first official press shoot for Jay Z and gearing up to the release of Reasonable Doubt. It was the same Lexus GS from the Dead Presidents video. We scooped Jay from his new condo off Atlantic Ave in Brooklyn, and then headed downtown to shoot next to the Riverside Cafe. I had free reign to art direct and pick locations as long as Jay got to cover two things he was specific about. He brought a custom made JAŸ-Z vanity plate that we taped on top of the existing plate. He also brought two bottles of Cristal that were carefully placed in the windshield of his car. That’s some pretty clear symbolism and self-marketing and Jay knew exactly what kind of image that he wanted, even back then. I also shot at Battery Park to be directly in the middle of more symbols of material wealth. I asked Jay to pose in front of a giant yacht and humored him that one day he would own one himself. He smiled and responded, “No doubt.”
